COMBUSTIBLE DUST

Our industry is a major target of the OSHA Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program (NEP). As such, the mere presence of coal dust anywhere in the plant can trigger major citations and fines. Visit our Dust Emphasis page to learn more about this issue and the Standard of Care required of your operation.

COAL BEHAVIOR....

ALL COALS ARE THE SAME! Adhering to this misconception without knowledge can have devastating impacts. Predicting coal behavior is a major component of our knowledge base that is applied to your operational configurations.

The Utility FPE Group, Inc. is a documented expert in PRB Coals & BioFuel Risk Management issues and offers an array of risk engineering services specifically for coal & biomass fired plants and handling facilities. Although our concentration is in power plants, we have applied our expertise to other coal consumers such as cement plants and paper mills.

We are not the typical consultant who walks through your plant and makes a list of recommendations that would make an insurance engineer blush. Do not expect the traditional.....because using traditional approaches to coal handling operations and protection still contributes to fires & explosions that result in:
            needless personnel injuries & deaths,
needless major unit outages and production loss
                                               needless millions in property damage

COAL FIRED PLANTS & PRB CONVERSIONS ARE OUR SPECIALTY!
PRB Coal Conversions bring an inherently greater risk to your operations than previously experience with bituminous coals. Much higher dusting and greater propensity for spontaneous combustion combine with older transport configurations to cause an escalation of fires and explosions. Our assessment techniques are designed to capture problematic aspects that other consultants miss. We don’t sell equipment. We don’t just tell you what you need....we tell you why your current configurations aren’t performing.

BIOMASS FUEL CONVERSIONS!
With greater attention to carbon reduction on the horizon, the solid fossil fuel burning industry will experience the need for more testing of coal and biomass blending. Currently, all acceptable biomass fuels bring with it combustible dust issues, just as with coal. We provide assessments of risk potential of blending these fuels in your operations. See our “Combustible Dust” page for further information.

       We are catalyst for sustainable
        Safety, Performance and Reliability.

HOW DO YOU LEARN?

“Some people learn by listening, some people learn by loss, and some people never learn that PRB coal is going to behave the way nature intended.” Ed Douberly

IS BIOMASS DUST COMBUSTIBLE?

As with coal there are variables, but in short....yes. Dust from wood, saw dust, corn, peat, wheat, barley, paper, rubber and cellulose are all combustible, with Kst values ranging from 75 for corn to 240 for rubber dust and barley grain dust. Biomass allows greater fuel flexibility, but does not reduce the risk of exposure to fire and explosions.
